Virashiv Tablet (Emtricitabine 200mg, Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate 300mg and Efavirenz 600mg) – Overview
Virashiv tablet contains Emtricitabine 200mg, Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate 300mg, and Efavirenz 600mg is a combination antiretroviral medication used for the treatment of HIV-1 infection. This medication is intended for use in conjunction with other anti-HIV agents to improve overall viral suppression and reduce the risk of developing drug-resistant strains.
Medical Uses / Indications
This combination therapy is indicated for the treatment of HIV infection in adults and pediatric patients over the age of 12 years. It serves to lower the viral load in the body, thereby improving immune function and reducing the risk of HIV-related complications.
How Virashiv Tablet Works (Mechanism of Action)
Emtricitabine and Tenofovir are nucleoside/nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) that work by inhibiting the reverse transcriptase enzyme, which is crucial for the replication of HIV. Efavirenz is a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) that binds to and inhibits reverse transcriptase by inducing conformational changes in the enzyme, further preventing viral replication. The combined effect of these agents leads to a decrease in viral load and helps maintain the immune system.
Dosage & Administration
The recommended dosage for adults and adolescents weighing at least 35 kg is one tablet taken orally once daily. It is advisable to take the medication on an empty stomach, preferably at bedtime, to minimize side effects, particularly CNS-related effects associated with Efavirenz.
Possible Side Effects
Common side effects include:
- Nausea
- Diarrhea
- Fatigue
- Headache
- Dizziness
Serious side effects may include:
- Severe allergic reactions
- Liver problems (hepatotoxicity)
- Renal toxicity
- Neuropsychiatric effects (depression, suicidal thoughts)
- Pancreatitis
Patients should report any unusual symptoms or severe side effects to their healthcare provider immediately.
Drug Interactions
Emtricitabine, Tenofovir, and Efavirenz can interact with several medications. Notable interactions include:
- John’s Wort may decrease the effectiveness of Efavirenz.
- Certain anticonvulsants, rifampin, and other medications that induce liver enzymes may affect drug levels.
- Concurrent use of other nephrotoxic agents may increase the risk of renal issues.
Always consult a healthcare provider before starting any new medication or supplement.
Precautions
Before starting Virashiv Tablet, inform your healthcare provider about any history of liver disease, kidney problems, mental health disorders, or drug allergies. Regular monitoring of kidney function and liver enzymes is recommended during the treatment course.
Storage & Handling
Store the medication in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight at room temperature. Keep it out of reach of children and do not use it past the expiration date on the packaging.
Missed Dose
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume the regular dosing schedule. Do not double up on doses to make up for a missed dose. Always consult a healthcare professional if unsure.
